From January 6, 2021 to January 27, 2021 Hindolo Pokawa and Dustyn Montgomery embarked on a grassroots effort to walk the entire length (315 Miles) across Sierra Leone. Our purpose was to call attention and a call for action to the over 3,000 rape cases recorded in just 2019, and to also engage with other groups to amplify to voices of rape victims in the country. Our walk was also designed to protest the harms caused to women and children through the acts of rape and sexual gender based violence in Sierra Leone, and globally. This was a grassroots effort, as we collected anecdotal stories from community members all across the country about their own experiences with rape culture, and SGBV. As we moved across village to village, town to town, city to city, the narratives we collected remained the same, rape and sexual gender based violence is harming the lives of both women and children and something must be done.
Sierra Leone Foundation for New Democracy is asking for the support to develop a Masculinity Without Violence Training in Sierra Leone. As Hindolo P. and Dustyn M. walked the entire length of the country in 21 days, the need for action became increasingly evident.
Our Masculinity Without Violence Training will be a newly developed program pulling from and building on previous curriculum on discussions with men and boys about the harms of rape and gender based violence in their communities.
