Sierra Leone is home to the first western learning institution in Africa, the Fourah Bay College, giving way to the country’s nickname “The Athens of Africa.” At the same time, Sierra Leone faces a low — and potentially decreasing — literacy rate: around 42%, which is low compared to other African nations such as Zimbabwe (86%).
Literacy rates are especially low in rural areas such as Mondema where there aren’t any libraries — all libraries in Sierra Leone are mainly located in urban settings. Additionally, existing libraries are foreign-funded and require some kind of appointment or special circumstances to be used. In Gorama Mende Chiefdom, a community with a population of 44,000 people, there has never been a library to support students’ and community members’ studying and research for their own development. There exists a dependency on libraries outside the village in order to access academic knowledge, keeping high school graduation rates low and limiting extra-curricular activities — once students leave school, they no longer have access to learning opportunities. This also leads to a lack of sex education, which causes higher rates of teenage pregnancy, compounded by limited access to internet, electricity, and recreational opportunities.
